Cagarro (Calonectris borealis) or cory’s shearwater is a specie considered one of the main biological richness of São Jorge, which occupies the coastal cliffs and islets for nesting and rest. For those who do not know, it is a seabird that appears in the paths and surroundings of the enterprise that emits a very particular sound, as natural as the sound of the waves of the sea, especially at sundown causing surprise to the guests and even some fun moments worthy of registration.
The Government of the Azores annually promotes the SOS Cagarro Campaign, through the Regional Directorate of Sea Affairs, with the support of the Regional Directorate of the Environment, having as institutional partners the Natural Parks of São Jorge Island and Azorina, S.A.
This initiative aims essentially to alert to the need for preservation of this protected species that nests in the Azores, involving populations, visitors, and entities in the rescue of juvenile cory’s shearwater found near the roads and in their proximity. Some of the juvenile saved in the Azores more than 7 years ago, have already returned to our archipelago to mate and have their bird nests.
The Abrigo da Cascata accommodation joins the SOS Cagarro Campaign, annually between October 15 and November 15, a period that matches with the departure of juvenile cory’s shearwater from the nests for the first oceanic flight. There is a danger of collisions and trampling of cory’s shearwater during autumn, so the disturbance, obstruction or destruction of their habitats and nesting sites, as well as the capture and feeding of birds, should be avoided.
